[space height=”1″]

Dermaplanning

Dermaplanning is an excellent treatment for freshening and vitalizing our skin, and may also be used to enhance the absorption of a number of plant/chemical peels. Dermaplanning is usually only performed on the face and generally excludes any blading of the nose, eye lids, neck, or chest. Furthermore, it is recommended that the procedure be done every 3 to 4 weeks (or once a month), which coincides with a normal skin cycle of approximately 30 days. Along with sloughing away dead skin cells, dermaplaning can help reduce the visibility of acne scarring and slight wrinkling, as well as do away with extraneous vellous (translucent) hairs on the face.

How it Works

The Dermaplane Aesthetician carefully exfoliates the top layer of the skin with a specialized surgical blade. The process removes dead skin cells, peach fuzz, and stimulates new skin development. This procedure takes place in the medical center and time allotted is typically 30 minutes. There is no “down time” involved and you may return to your office or your busy schedule afterwards. Patients who routinely receive Dermaplane treatments comment on the smoothness of their complexion and its “baby skin like quality” and see an immediate improvement to the radiance of their skin tone.

Dermaplanning: The Beauty Secret Hollywood Doesn’t Want You to Know About

Celebs seem to possess naturally glowing skin, luscious locks, and wide-awake eyes—partly because of their good genes, partly due to their amazing makeup artists and hair stylists, and partly because of some very well-kept industry secrets. Dermaplaning is one of the latter chances are, even if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve seen the results.

Additional Benefits

There are several benefits to blading that may make it the ideal method of skin exfoliation for you. First of all, no chemicals are involved, which means less irritation for your newly sensitive skin. Secondly, a session will generally last no more than 30 minutes and won’t leave you with a red, swollen complexion afterwards. In fact, results can be noticed immediately. Furthermore, because the blade being used is small, dermaplaning can target specific problem areas more easily and skillfully than other procedures that use larger instruments and focus on the face as a whole.

To top that off, dermaplaning is relatively inexpensive when compared to similar procedures such as VI chemical peels and dermabrasion. Dermaplaning is also frequently used prior to another facial treatment. Since dermaplaning removes the dead skin cells and stimulates the surface of the skin, chemical or plant based skin formulations are absorbed more efficiently and results are remarkably improved. Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It has been used for many years, but many estheticians don’t even know it exists, and certainly, many don’t use it. When patients hear the word dermaplaning, they quickly associate the term with the procedure known as dermabrasion, and won’t even consider it as a possible treatment. Dermabrasion is a medical procedure in which the skin is abraded down to the dermis using a whisk-like device. There are many complications associated with dermabrasion, including infections and scarring, which is why it is not commonly used anymore. Dermaplaning, on the other hand, is a simple shaving of the epidermis.

Because dermaplanning is a quick procedure with few to no adverse effects, it has quickly gained popularity among cosmetic medical providers across the country. Using a scalpel and a delicate touch, the provider simply abrades the surface of the skin using light feathering strokes. This is a great treatment to offer to patients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin because of the risk that the chemicals will be absorbed into the blood stream, and may be transferred to the fetus or the child. It is also a first choice for patients who have excess vellus hair on the skin. This hair often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in the follicles, so removing the hair gives the patient healthier looking skin.

Although merely an old wives’ tale, many patients are often concerned that the hair will grow back heavier and darker after dermaplaning. This is not the case. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair, it will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment. Removing epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Physicians may recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for medical procedures such as laser treatments or deep chemical peels. It also may be used by estheticians to prepare the skin for superficial chemical peels or before a cleansing facial.

Dermaplanning is most often used on patients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance.

What the patient can expect

There is no downtime associated with this procedure. The patient should be educated about the importance of using sunscreen to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation. Dermaplaning can be done as often as every two weeks, although it is usually done when vellus hair starts to grow back, which is generally in one month’s time.

The only contraindications to dermaplaning include an allergy to nickel, numerous raised lesions on the skin and inflamed acne.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT DERMAPLANNING

Here are the most common questions we receive about Dermaplaning.

[accordion title=”What Is Dermaplanning ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Dermaplanning is a skin procedure that involves using a sharp tool to exfoliate the surface of your skin, while also removing small, fine hairs. Basically, an esthetician or dermatologist will take a small scalpel and very gently scrape the surface of your skin using light, feathering strokes. If this sounds like something out of a horror movie, keep reading—you might be surprised.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”What are the benefits of Dermaplaning ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]So what exactly does lightly scraping your skin with a scalpel accomplish? A lot, apparently. Dermaplanning’s purpose is to give your skin an immediate exfoliation for a luminous glow that lasts a week. The benefits are dewy skin, faster cell turnover, and a smoother texture. Physicians might recommend dermaplaning to anyone who is about to undergo a laser treatment or deep chemical peel, to allow the products to penetrate more deeply into the skin. Plus, the light “shaving” motion gets rid of light facial hairs while it exfoliates.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”Who can benefit from Dermaplaning ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Anyone who has unwanted facial hair and anyone who wants exfoliation can benefit. Dermaplaning is also great for anyone who is unable to use certain products or other exfoliating treatments, such as pregnant women or those with super-sensitive skin. It’s an alternative way to lightly resurface the skin more safely.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”Dermaplaning or Dermabrasion which is better ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Lest you get confused, dermaplaning is not in any way similar to dermabrasion, which is a mechanical exfoliation that uses micro-crystals and suctioning to create exfoliation. Dermabrasion is not as popular as it once was, because of complications like infections. Dermaplaning, on the other hand, is, quick, easy, and requires no down time.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”Is Dermaplaning painful ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Dermaplanning is virtually painless, the only possible side effect is slight redness, which fades almost immediately.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”What does the procedure fell like ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Dermaplanning is a painless procedure and can be compared to the sensation of shaving your legs, but in this case, it’s on your face. First, the aesthetician will cleanse and thoroughly dry your skin. Next, she’ll pull an area of your skin taut with one hand, and hold a sterile 10 gauge blade at a 45 degree angle in the other hand and use short, swift strokes to scrape off dead skin cells and peach fuzz.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”How long does a Dermaplaning treatment take to perform ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]A Typical Dermaplaning treatment is 30 – 40 minutes long.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”Are there any side effects ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]There are no side effects and zero downtime. After the treatment, your skin will be highly sensitive to sun exposure and may already look very pink, so be sure to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”What kind of results should I anticipate ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]You’ll immediately look more radiant with a more even skin tone and texture. All of your peach fuzz will be gone, which is why first-timers say their skin has never felt so soft before.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”How often should I do Dermaplaning to achieve optimum results ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Dermaplaning removes 21 days worth of dead skin cells, so it’s best to allow the skin to complete its rejuvenation cycle before your next treatment. So approximately every 30 days.[/accordion]

[accordion title=”Who is best qualified to perform this treatment ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]Dermaplanning should be administered by a board certified dermatologist or licensed aesthetician who specializes in this procedure. It’s always a good idea to ask how long they’ve been administering dermaplaning to know their level of experience—there’s a very sharp blade involved![/accordion]

[accordion title=”What does it cost ?” opened=”0″ class_icon_closed=”plus” class_icon_opened=”minus” border=”true”]A normal Dermaplanning treatment costs $100-$200 per session.[/accordion]
